The prevalence of flu has continued to rise in North Carolina since the middle of January, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Last year, 59 people died from the flu.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of these individuals during this hard time", said Robert Resendes, Public Health Director.

More than 25,000 flu shots were administered by Lambton Public Health, health-care providers and pharmacies during the last flu season from November 2015 to April 2016. "It is important for people to understand that flu is a very common virus that can cause serious and deadly infections in some people".

The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that emergency warning signs in children may also include rapid breathing, a fever with a rash, a bluish skin color, not being wakeful or interactive with others and not being interested in drinking enough fluids. Death rates fluctuate annually but have been reported as high as 49,000 in a single year. Tennessee 's reports indicated flu numbers went down from widespread to regional. Mothers of newborns should also be vaccinated to protect their newborns who can not receive the vaccine until they're 6 months old. By staying home, the agency stresses that means not going to school or work, shopping, social events, public gatherings, travel or any other activity that may expose others. At the same time, flu activity is now widespread in 44 states after hitting a high of widespread activity in 46 states the prior week. Health officials say it's still not too late to get vaccinated. The flu vaccine can be administered to anyone 6 months of age or older.
