With a victory over Chinese Taipei on Tuesday in Korea, Israel could take another large step toward an appearance in the second round. Longtime major leaguer Jason Marquis received the start for Israel while Doosan Bears starter Won-Jun Chang took the mound for South Korea. However, it should be noted that Israel's best reliever in this game was Josh Zeid as he pitched three scoreless innings earning the win while striking out four.

In the day's final game, the No. 1-ranked team in the world brought out its bats on its home turf, as Japan bludgeoned Cuba, 11-6, at the Tokyo Dome.

South Korea fell to the Netherlands 5-0 at the World Baseball Classic (WBC) on Tuesday, its second straight loss that all but dashed its hopes of advancing further. The top-two teams from each group are then divided into two pools where they play in a modified double-elimination tournament.

There's a long way to go before a Hollywood ending comes into sight - the championship game is March 22 at Dodger Stadium - but Israel already has pulled off two of the biggest surprises in the history of the WBC.

"It's been a flawless trip in every regard".

Of the 16 nations represented in this year's WBC, Israel was the very last one in and is the only participant not now among the top 20 in the world rankings.

Kuo said he plans to start Sung Chia-hao (宋家豪), who pitches in Japan, against the Netherlands. "The style of play, the urgency of tournament baseball, and the stage are foreign to me and many of my teammates, but clearly we have been a quick study".

Israel responded with five runs in the seventh inning and three more in the eight and ninth, putting away the game for good. They were not shown on any of Israel's major television or sports channels. The World Baseball Classic allows players with multiple national affiliations to choose which country they want to play for, be it a country in which they are a naturalized citizen, the country of their birth or the country of a parent's birth. "We don't have an All-Star team". And who do we have to thank for that?

Looking ahead, the Netherlands returns to action for a clash with Chinese Taipei on Wednesday at 4:30 a.m. ET.

Mensch means a person of integrity or honor. "I think the Mensch reflects the pride that this team has in their Jewish heritage and sense of humor around having fun while playing the game of baseball". Israel extended their lead to 6-0 in the third inning when Lavarnway hit the first home run of the WBC with a man on.

With its two wins (the first of which was a 2-1 extra-inning nail-biter over Korea on Monday), it appears likely that Israel will advance to the quadrennial tournament's second round, which begins on Sunday in Tokyo. Israel also chalked up hits from Sam Fuld and a double off the bat of third baseman Ty Kelly.
