The outlet quoted a transit agent describing the scene after a man leaped out of a vehicle and went on the attack.

A man was arrested after injuring five people with an ax at Duesseldorf's main train station late Thursday, police said, correcting earlier police reports of two arrests.

"People travelling were injured by the assailants' axes", the police said, adding that it was unclear exactly how many attackers were involved.

One of the suspects jumped off a bridge while attempting to escape, but was arrested underneath the bridge, according to German news outlet Bild.

Shocking images show injured passengers lying on the floor in the station, surrounded by paramedics.

Local media say at least four men stormed the central train station in Dusseldorf and went on a rampage while armed with the weapons.

Regional police posted on Twitter saying that a "comprehensive" police response was underway and that the train station was closed.
