Australia's three-time Paralympics gold medallist Kurt Fearnley and two-time Olympic gold medallist Anna Meares were on hand to kick off the baton's journey. The Baton will travel through all Commonwealth member countries over 388 days, covering 230,000 kilometres to its final destination, the opening ceremony of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Later on Monday, the Queen will attend the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey alongside her husband, Prince Philip, her son, Prince Charles, and her grandson, Prince Harry. "However, there is an even more powerful message to be seen and experienced as the Baton passes from hand to hand, from seashore to mountaintop, through cities, towns, and villages".

Mrs May said: "As we prepare to host the Commonwealth summit in London next April, we are reminded today of the unique and proud global relationships that we have forged with the diverse and vibrant alliance of Commonwealth nations".

The Games are declared officially open when the message is read aloud. "It is the message of a peace-building Commonwealth", the Queen wrote.

School children from all of the countries represented at the games were also at the event and there was a performance from Australian singer Cody Simpson. What I think should be the role of the Commonwealth now is to help its smaller members to come up with the templates to have trade agreements with the United Kingdom and amongst themselves, now that there might be this window of opportunity.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the 2022 Games, the 90-year-old monarch started the countdown to next year's showpiece on the Gold Coast, Australia with a message of "respect and understanding" for others as part of a day of events commemorating the 52-country alliance.
