Issa Hayatou is out as president of the African football confederation (CAF) in what could signal a sea change for the sport on the continent.

Many Ghanaians have raised concerns that young and intelligent as Kwesi Nyantakyi is, it was a missed opportunity for him to be CAF President especially when it was clear that the end had come for Hayatou. His successor will not only helm the CAF, Ahmad will also replace Hayatou on FIFA's Executive Committee.

Before then, Pinnick had gone on CNN to publicly declare the support of the Nigerian Football Federation for Ahmad.

Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino was seen as a strong influence, as he had made no bones about his support for a change at Caf.

Although he is still basking in the glory of his candidate's success, Chiyangwa must now use his privileged position in world football to bring development to Zimbabwean soccer.

The 70-year-old from Cameroon left the congress room when Thursday's result was announced without commenting, led away by the arm by one of his aides.

In an interview conducted through ONSport together with Egypt FA chairman Hany Abou-Rida, CAF president Ahmad Ahmad talked about his latest triumph and how confident he was of his chances.

"Because also he's already said we must focus on more development‚ and give more development support - more finances to national associations".

Meanwhile, other African nations have hailed the move as a seismic change for African football.

While Ahmad's campaign team had predicted the result, and there were signs that Hayatou's grip on power was loosening as he sought an eighth term, his defeat was still stunning.

Abou-Rida then proceeded to congratulate Ahmad Ahmad and stressing that heading the CAF is a hard job, but the president will have his support always.

He had been challenged for the Caf presidency only twice before and both times won with landslide victories. The 57-year-old has promised to modernize the body and make it more transparent. Ahmad was accused of alleged corruption in the award of the 2022 World Cup ticket to Qatar.
