The white 2014 Chrysler was stopped at the inspection booth when it was trying to cross the San Ysidro border, according to Fox News. While the auto was at the inspection booth, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection canine team circled the vehicle.

Three women and one man - all Chinese nationals - were taken out of the trunk and processed, officials said.

All four stowaways were removed from the vehicle and led to a secure location for further processing, at which point it was determined that they were Chinese nationals who were in the USA illegally. During a background check, the officers confirmed the four people as Chinese nationals with no documentation to enter the U.S.

A driver faces smuggling charges after four Chinese citizens were discovered in the trunk of his vehicle as he tried to enter the USA from Mexico.

The driver, whose name was not released, was taken into federal custody and is at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego awaiting arraignment.

"CBP officers remain vigilant in securing our Nation's borders", said Pete Flores, director of field operations for CBP in San Diego.

Meanwhile, CBP seized the sedan and placed an immigration hold on the four illegal aliens to begin removal proceedings. "San Ysidro CBP officers stopped a violation of our immigration law and were able to resolve the incident safely".
