Delhi saves 290 MW by switching off lights during Earth Hour

Around the world, World Wildlife Fund for Nature's Earth Hour was celebrated by turning off non-essential lights and appliances for an hour from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

While switching off lights and unessential devices does result in substantial energy savings and reduction in carbon dioxide levels, that is not the only motive of Earth Hour. This year too like past years we at Local Governance Network requested municipal bodies, civil society groups, media houses, business groups, senior citizens and schools and colleges to observe the hour by switching off their lights.

Since 2007 there have been positive steps made to deal with climate change.

Building on the impact it has created in the last decade, in 2017, Earth Hour supporters in Spain and the United Kingdom are urging the government to deliver strong climate action and meet their commitments under the Paris Agreement. If the victor chooses to travel in winter they can celebrate the ultimate dark-hour activity, searching for the spectacular Northern Lights.

Why is Earth Hour important?

Climate change is depressing stuff, but as Earth Hour demonstrated on Saturday, millions of people understand that humans must change their ways if we have any hope of preserving our home. It may not seem like a big change, but at least it puts climate change in front of us.
