David's Sling, formerly known as Magic Wand, is an IDF system being jointly developed by the Israeli defense contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and the American defense contractor Raytheon, created to intercept enemy planes, drones, tactical ballistic missiles, medium- to long-range rockets and cruise missiles, fired at ranges from 25 to 185 miles.

Amid heightened tensions, Israel's David's Sling anti-missile system became operational Sunday, marking the completion of the Jewish state's three-tiered air defense arsenal.

The Iron Dome and Arrow systems were also jointly developed and funded with the United States as part of Washington's annual multi-billion dollar military aid package to Israel.

Iron Dome has been widely praised for protecting Israeli civilians from indiscriminate rocket attacks emanating from Gaza, particularly during the 2012 and 2014 conflicts between Hamas and Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Defense officials were in attendance at the ceremony launching David's Sling. -Gen. Zvika Haimovich, commander of the air force's Aerial Defense Division.

"Of course, we also developed the Arrow system against strategic long-range missiles, as well as other systems", Netanyahu said.

Israel have operationalised the David Sling medium range air defense system battery, adding a new layer of air defense to the country. "Thanks to this system, we will be able to deal with our enemies, which we unfortunately have".

In a rare clash along the Syrian border last month Israel shot down an anti-aircraft missile fired at its planes as they were carrying out an airstrike on a suspected Hezbollah weapons convoy from Syria to Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

The system is equipped with the Stunner interceptor missile which have two targeting and guidance systems installed in its nose-tip (a radar and an electro-optical sensor).
