Sarah McLachlan was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

In between banter from co-hosts Adams and Russell Peters and a slew of performances, the show occasionally veered into more sombre territory.

Cohen posthumously won Album of the Year for his final effort, You Want It Darker, as well as Artist of the Year. Coldplay - who, of course, are not Canadian - won International Album of the Year for A Head Full of Dreams.

On another political note, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and wife Sophie Gregoire came on stage in Ottawa to introduce a tribute performance for the late Leonard Cohen by another Canadian songstress, Feist.

Downie appeared in a pre-recorded acceptance speech after winning the songwriter of the year Juno for his "Secret Path" solo project. "Secret Path" also picked up best adult alternative album and recording package of the year awards.

The 21-year-old was also nominated for the Juno Fan Choice Award and Songwriter of the Year Award and performed at the ceremony in Ottawa. "The Junos just played off the Tragically Hip WITH A TRAGICALLY HIP SONG in the middle of acknowledging Gord Downie".

The Single of the Year went to "Spirits", by The Strumbellas, which beat out singles by The Weeknd and Drake, and The Dirty Nil was named breakthrough group of the year. She has won the Canadian Country Music Association's Female Artist of the Year three times running in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

"The United States is 241 and they're aging horribly - especially since January", Peters said, in reference to U.S. President Donald Trump's inauguration.

He continued his tribute by admitting his father was determined his songs would be kept alive after his death, telling the crowd: "And so I know that he would be incredibly happy to have this Juno and he was very suspicious of people who didn't understand how great Canada is, so thank you Canada".

Backstage, after the show, Shawn dished about what's inspiring the music he's writing for the next album (Drake and Rihanna!) and gave an update on what his new tour is going to be like. Viewers will also have their say with the Juno Fan Choice award.
