Norwich police to launch distracted driving campaign

TxDot is launching their "Talk, Text, Crash" distracted driving campaign.

An estimated 1 in 5 traffic crashes in Texas is caused by distracted driving, and the problem is getting worse.

To better understand the dangers and consequences of smart phone distracted driving, AT&T is bringing its virtual reality simulator to more than 50 California schools and communities for National Distracted Driving Awareness Month this year as part of its IT CAN WAIT initiative.

National estimates by NHTSA, mark 10% of fatal crashes, 15% of injury crashes, and 14% of all police-reported motor vehicle crashes in 2015 as distraction-affected crashes. That is a 9 percent increase in fatalities as compared to the previous year.

In an analysis of data from 2009 through 2012, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that while more than 80 percent of drivers believed texting while driving was "completely unacceptable", more than a third of them admitted to reading texts while driving.

The Berlin Police Department and the Connecticut Department of Transportation urge you to put your phone down when you get behind the wheel. If you need to text, pull over and park your vehicle in a safe place first.

New Jersey starts a statewide crackdown on distracted driving Friday. "If you want to send a text and you have a passenger inside the vehicle have that person send the text for you", added Corporal Henry.

If you get caught you could pay some hefty fines.

Don't follow the pack, be a leader.

Greenwich Police are warning residents to put their cell phones away or be prepared to pay.

"Everyone knows texting and driving is illegal and risky, and everyone knows they shouldn't be doing it-but we see it happen all the time", said Lieutenant Kevin E. Geno.
