During Wednesday's hearing, Kelly said that the US has "seen an incredible drop in the number of migrants coming out of Central America that are taking that terribly unsafe route" from their home countries. Whereas a Pittsburgh company has plans to store nuclear waste in the wall like a "booby trap", which is probably illegal.

The border wall should be "a piece of art", Russ Baumgartner, CEO of Concrete Contractors Interstate of San Diego, tells the AP.

Crisis Resolution Security Services Incorporated of Clarence, Illinois, proposes a wall that is 17 metres high and seven metres wide at the top - allowing plenty of room for tourists to enjoy those shimmering desert views. "We're not going to sign a blank check for a wall that we know isn't going to get built".

But Sen. Steve Daines, R-Montana, said he is confident that Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly will use a "systematic" approach to securing the border that would address nuances of securing the southern border.

As NPR's Richard Gonzales reports, the CBP plans to announce the finalists for the contract in June, at which point the companies still in the running would be expected to build a prototype roughly 30 feet long and anywhere from18 to 30 feet tall.

"The north side of wall (i.e. USA facing side) shall be aesthetically pleasing in color, anti-climb texture, etc., to be consistent with general surrounding environment", CBP stated. The multibillion-dollar project along the 2,000-mile border has many outspoken critics, including the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico, which said last week that Mexican companies expressing interest were betraying their country.

Gleason Partners LLC of Las Vegas is pushing a solar panel version which would generate 2 megawatts of electricity an hour. Both proposals were first reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune.

"The election and the possibility that the wall, everything was going to happen, encouraged them to come now, " said Sister Norma Pimentel, executive director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, which operates the shelter at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McAllen. He submitted designs for a concrete wall and for one made of other strong materials to protect the barrier from a vehicle bomb or suicide vest with seismic sensors and drones to secure the barrier. U.S officials have told the Associated Press that they expect to choose four to 10 bidders that would build prototypes for $200,000 to $500,000 each. However, the San Diego police and sheriff's office said their protection would extend to peaceful, law-abiding protesters, and made no mention of protecting construction workers. His pledge to "build the wall" and make Mexico pay for it, was a big applause line on the campaign trail.

"Absolutely I would go to the people who are in charge and, you hate to say I would get a lawyer, but if it comes to that issue, you would", she said.

According to Kelly's original testimony provided to Fox News, there has been a sharp decline in apprehensions along the southwest border since the beginning of the year, with March marking the fifth straight month of decline, apprehending 17,000 individuals attempting to enter the USA illegally. That compares with more than 43,000 who were detained in December.
