South braces for stormy day expected to bring tornado risk

Alabama's governor declared a state of emergency because of the threat, resulting in multiple school closings, and many schools in SC dismissed classes early. Water pooling on the streets is always a threat during downpours, but it hadn't rained hard enough in Charleston to flood at high tide Wednesday afternoon. This threat lies in the region that we frequently refer to as the "warm sector", or the area in between a cold and warm front.

The National Weather Service is predicting widespread thunderstorms across much of Alabama and Georgia and into the Florida Panhandle and southwestern SC. A few strong, violent, long-track tornadoes can not be ruled out, especially in the moderate and high risk areas. "The storms will be rotating, will rapidly develop, and become severe".

The National Weather Service said it had received reports of baseball-sized hail in the west Alabama town of Camden, but only small ice pellets fell at the McGraw-Webb Chevrolet Inc.

Emlaw says he isn't aware of any tornadoes developing from this system yet, but said such storms are unpredictable.


Pasquotank-Camden Emergency Management Coordinator wrote in an email that the most severe weather is expected between 3 a.m. and 10 a.m. Thursday.

A fire department building and elementary school in the town of Goodman, Missouri, some 300 miles (480 km) southwest of St. Louis, were extensively damaged when a tornado touched down on Tuesday night.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Another line of severe storms rolled through the Carolinas early Thursday, a day after severe weather that produced snow, hail and heavy rains in some places.

The weather system is also expected to bring heavy rains to the Interstate 20 corridor, including metro Atlanta, according to the National Weather Service.

As many as 20 tornadoes touched down in Georgia on Monday, NWS told Regan.
