The shift will allow National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, who took over after Gen. Michael Flynn resigned, to choose his own second in command.

McFarland defended her approach in a February interview, telling The New York Times, "Not only is this a new administration, but it is a different party, and Donald Trump was elected by people who wanted the status quo thrown out".

The man who shot and killed two managers at a Florida gym before turning the gun on himself had just been fired from the fitness center for workplace violence, police said Sunday.

Dina Powell, a former Goldman Sachs executive and purported ally of President Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and daughter, Ivanka, was recently named a deputy national security adviser and will remain in that role alongside whomever McMaster recruits to replace McFarland.

A new memorandum about the council's composition, published on Wednesday in the Federal Register, also reflected that the director of national intelligence and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as the energy secretary, had been restored as members of the principals committee. She previously worked as an aide in the Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford administrations, and she served as a Pentagon speechwriter and spokesman under President Ronald Reagan.

McFarland proved not to be a good fit at the NSC, the person said, adding that Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly was involved in the decision as well.

The senior White House official said the changes were not in response to the recent controversy linked to the NSC. McFarland's departure from the National Security Council comes amid rumors President Trump is planning a broad staff shake-up.

Kathleen Troia (K.T.) McFarland was brought to the White House by Flynn, who was sacked for not disclosing his level of contacts with Russian Federation to the president or vice president.

Standard security protocol requires the president to fly on either Air Force One, a jumbo jet, or Marine One, a helicopter.
