President Donald Trump proclaimed the success of his summit with China on Saturday, tweeting, "It was a great honor to have President Xi Jinping and Madame Peng Liyuan of China as our guests in the United States". It also brushed aside claims that the strike was a warning to the North Korea, saying the regime is not intimidated by such threats.

Both sides agreed that the meeting, which has drawn worldwide attention, "was positive and fruitful", Wang said, adding that the meeting has set a constructive tone for the development of China-US relations, and helped set the direction for collective endeavors.

South Korea and the USA have been conducting joint military drills recently, which have been viewed by the North as an act of war and preparation for invasion.

Mr Trump outraged China in December when he took the unorthodox step of accepting a phone call from the Taiwanese president.

Mr Trump pressed Mr Xi to do more to curb North Korea's nuclear programme in their summit meeting at Mr Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said.

Trump also noted the importance of protecting human rights, and asked China to adhere to worldwide norms in the seas of East Asia.

The hope, he said, is that "we can navigate a political outcome in which the Syrian people, in fact, will determine Bashar al-Assad's fate and his legitimacy".

"This was Trump's first major move in worldwide affairs, and it leaves an impression that the decision was made in haste and not without contradiction", the newspaper said.

Trump and Xi are spending part of Friday in talks at Trump's estate in Florida.

They shared the view that efforts to realize a cease-fire and make progress on the political process in Syria, with the involvement of Russian Federation, as well as the fight against Islamic State militants are important, said a Japanese official who was at the talks.

Since he was on the campaign trail, Trump has repeatedly criticized what he sees as China's unfair trade practices and its reluctance to exercise its economic leverage over North Korea to curtail Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.

The visit was overshadowed by the missile barrage aimed at Syria, announced shortly after Trump and Xi wrapped up dinner Thursday night. You have now viewed your allowance of free articles.

Rice had this to say in January on National Public Radio regarding Syria: "We were able to find a solution that didn't necessitate the use of force that actually removed the chemical weapons that were known from Syria, in a way that the use of force would never have accomplished".

The missiles struck a military airfield in Syria that U.S. intelligence agencies believed were used for launching the April 4 chemical weapons attack on Syrian civilians in southern Idlib Province, Syria, Mr Trump wrote.
