Chinese state media cheer Xi-Trump meeting, say confrontation not inevitable

While the timing was largely coincidental, the fact that US President Donald Trump ordered the strike while hosting a summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping carried particular resonance given that the North's nuclear ambitions - and how best to thwart them - was among the top agenda items of their meeting.

Another option would be to send American nuclear weapons to South Korea.

Here is a complete history of North Korea's nuclear and missile tests beginning from August 1998 and ending at its most recent one this month, April 2017.

On a question about whether a pre-emptive USA strike on the North will be in breach of the 1973 Armistice Agreement, the official said he would not talk about a "hypothetical" matter. "I don't see any upside to it because the idea that we would use a nuclear weapon even against North Korea is highly unlikely".

"Both sides agreed that despite the global community's warnings, if North Korea makes strategic provocations such as a nuclear test or an ICBM launch, there should be strong additional measures in accordance with U.N. Security Council resolutions", Kim told reporters.

Wu did not speak to reporters.

Before the meeting at his Mar-a-Largo estate, Trump was reportedly presented with options to respond to the North's nuclear weapons program including placing USA nukes in South Korea or assassinating North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Xi thanked Trump for his hospitality and said the meeting had served the objective of advancing the US-China relationship.

The U.S. Navy strike group Carl Vinson canceled a planned trip to Australia and was moving toward the western Pacific Ocean near the Korean peninsula as a show of force, a U.S. official told Reuters over the weekend.

Their comments were echoed by a front-page commentary in the overseas edition of the ruling Communist Party's official People's Daily which said the meeting established the tone for the development of U.S.

United States officials said President Donald Trump's first meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week was an opportunity for the leaders of the world's two largest economies to get to know each other.

On Thursday and Friday, Trump hosted his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for talks during which he pressed Pyongyang's key ally to help curb the North's nuclear weapons program. China has previously said the system would destabilize the regional security balance and that its radar's reach would be intruding into Chinese territory. "That's the first time I'd heard them say that".

"It probably is not realistic for the attack North Korea", a Japanese defense ministry source said.

That's about all they appear to have accomplished after about 18 hours together at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort - a visit interrupted by a United States cruise-missile strike on Syria during dinner.

South Korean and US forces are also involved in annual joint military drills that run until the end of April. The United States has spoken enough about North Korea.

The swift action in Syria could be interpreted as a signal especially to defiant nuclear-armed North Korea - and by extension, its ally China - as well as other countries like Iran and Russian Federation of Trump's willingness to use military force if deemed necessary.

However, Keane's statements to The Times indicate that he's lost faith in diplomacy as a tool: "Our last three presidents spanning over 20 years have failed to stop the North Korean nuclear program", he said.
