In a press statement, the rights body's Regional Director for East Africa, Muthoni Wanyeki, argues that Nyanzi's prosecution violates Uganda's obligations regarding the right to freedom of expression under the country's Constitution, as well as regional and global human rights law.

However, that was until Nyanzi attacked his wife Janet, also the minister of education, over a claim the First Lady made in Parliament that the government does not have money to fulfill Museveni's 2016 campaign of providing schoolgirls with sanitary pads.

Nyanzi who is known to be a feminist and human rights champion appeared in Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Court today and the State asked for the examination of her mental state.

At the Monday court hearing, her defense team, was unable to apply for bail.

Amnesty International has condemned the Nyanzi's prosecution as one that "serves no legitimate goal". In remarks before a packed courtroom in the capital, Kampala, Nyanzi said she often writes metaphorically in her efforts to "speak truth to power".

"Arresting Nyanzi simply for criticising the President and his wife serves no legitimate objective".

Stella Nyanzi is a 42-year-old mother of three - a daughter of 12 and two nine-year-old boy twins.

Controversial lecturer Stella Nyanzi hit President Yuweri Museveni below the best and as a result she has been locked in the most dreaded prison in Uganda. If the Musevenis bought less bullets and tear-gas but more medicines for our public health, my father would be living today. President Museveni had promised on the campaign trail past year to provide sanitary pads for girls in need.

Dr Nyanzi also organized a public fundraising drive to buy sanitary towels for girls in school, which has collected thousands of dollars and gained widespread publicity among Ugandans at home and overseas.

Nyanzi is popular on Facebook for her relentless criticisms of Museveni, who has ruled since 1986.

Dr. Nyanzi's damning verbal assault on the Musevenis over their alleged dereliction of responsibilities towards the school-girls Includes referring to the General in a social media posting as "a pair of buttocks" and the First Lady as "empty-brained".

In 2016 Nyanzi made regional and worldwide headlines when she stripped nearly naked at Makerere University in protest at a disciplinary hearing against her by the University following a dispute with another staff member.
