At the White House press conference, Trump, who has repeatedly questioned NATO's objective, also said the Western military alliance is "no longer obsolete".

Trump will host NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in the Oval Office in the afternoon, and the two men will answer questions in a joint news conference.

White House officials on Wednesday said Trump and Stoltenberg would instead discuss encouraging North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members to channel more of their national economies into their defense budgets, a perennial and bipartisan concern for all U.S. administrations in the 21st century. "It's no longer obsolete", Trump said.

Trump said Wednesday he'd changed views after NATO's leaders assured him the group would turn its attention to combating groups like ISIS going forward. But NATO did recently established a new division to fight terrorism, as Stoltenberg noted.

"I would like to think that they didn't know, but certainly they could have", he said. He said that in NATO, "America has the best friends and the best allies in the world".

Relations have become strained over Moscow's support for President Bashar al Assad, whose Syrian forces allegedly carried out a chemical attack on civilians.

As a candidate Trump said the 28-member organization had outlived its usefulness.

Trump's evolution was likely impacted by his decision last week to launch 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles against the Syrian government, a move that prompted backlash from Moscow, according to a USA officials who briefed reporters Wednesday on condition of anonymity.

Trump talked often about getting along with Russian Federation and Vladimir Putin throughout the campaign.

And Trump says in an interview with Fox Business News that solving the standoff with North Korea isn't "as simple as people would think".

As to U.S. retaliatory missile attacks on a Syrian airfield used in the chemical attack, Trump said, "I have absolutely no doubts we did the right thing - and it was very successfully done, as you know".

"We need many different tools to stabilize our neighborhood", Stoltenberg said last month. "I think he had a very successful meeting with Russian Federation".

"In fact I can tell you, the money is pouring in", he said.
