In Jerusalem Christians mark Easter at site of Jesus's resurrection

At St Mary's Church, the special English service in the morning was led by Father Yeruva Bala Showreddy, which was attended by a huge crowd comprising women, children and the elderly.

Thousands of people around East Texas joined people around the world in commemorating Easter Sunday by gathering for worship, food and fun with family and friends. Tableaux enacting the resurrection of the Christ were staged and Easter eggs were distributed. The whole relationship with Christianity is that point.

'By his resurrection, Jesus Christ has set us free from the slavery of sin and death, and has opened before us the way to eternal life, ' he said.

During his "Urbi et Orbi" Easter message on Sunday, Pope Francis encouraged people not to lose faith amid wars, suffering, and destruction. While Roman Catholics eventually adopted the astronomically accurate Gregorian calendar, the Orthodox Church calculated Easter according to the less-accurate Julian calendar.


Perhaps today, too, is an appropriate time to reflect that the Christian faith that galvanizes so many, especially in this holy season, is in fact a minority faith in the world at large. It represents the resurrected Christ, as a symbol of life banishing death.

Late Saturday, Orthodox clerics transported the holy flame from Jerusalem by plane and it was then flown to other churches around the country.

The worshippers, attired in their best clothes, attended the midnight mass. It is a reconstruction of the cathedral that was destroyed by explosion under dictator Josef Stalin.

"The Church never ceases to say, faced with our defeats, our closed and fearful hearts, 'stop, the Lord is risen.' But if the Lord is risen, how come these things happen?" Hundreds of medieval Orthodox churches and monasteries are located there.
