Steve Stephens, 37, was wanted on a charge of aggravated murder in the death of Robert Godwin Cleveland.

After a brief pursuit, Stephens pulled over and put a bullet in his head, police said.

Zuckerberg, speaking at Facebook's annual conference for software developers, expressed the sympathy of company employees to the friends and family of the shooting victim. "We have a lot of work and we will keep doing all we can to prevent tragedies like this from happening", Zuckerberg said.

The murder was later posted to the social media site by the killer, who was said to be distraught over a break-up with his girlfriend.

Pennsylvania State troopers hit Cleveland Facebook killer Steve Stephens' auto from behind in order to stop him, a witness said.

"Keeping our global community safe is an important part of our mission", the company said. The suspect, Steve Stephens, later killed himself before surrendering.

A United States hunt for the gunman accused of murdering a grandfather and posting the crime on Facebook ended Tuesday with the suspect killing himself after a brief pursuit with police in Pennsylvania.

"He's laying there -Oh, Lord have mercy", she said, moments after walking out her front door and spotting Robert Godwin Sr.'s body.

Authorities say they received a tip that Stephens' vehicle was in the parking lot of a McDonald's in Erie on Tuesday.

Police investigating Stephens, though, say they have found no evidence indicating he actually killed the 13 other people.

The police chief said Tuesday that it wasn't clear whether Stephens had any help while he was on the run or where he had been and that investigators will try to retrace he steps.

Lane said the last time she talked to Stephens was Saturday night and he told her he had quit his job and was moving out of state.

"There might be people out there in similar situations and we could find out why he did what he did", said Williams.

Erie County is in the northwestern corner of the state, roughly 100 miles (160 km) northeast of Cleveland.

Based on the timeline, there was a significant gap between when the video of the shooting was reported and when it was taken down by the company.

Police said Sunday night Stephens may have left the state and warned residents of Pennsylvania, Indiana, Michigan and NY to be on alert.
