Donald Trump: Only time will tell on US-China trade

North Korea promised to be, along with trade, the most neuralgic issue.

The two leaders agreed that their first meeting, held at the seaside Mar-a-Lago resort in the US state of Florida, was "positive and fruitful". The two leaders talked as they walked past palm trees and peach-colored stucco walls.

But the two days of talks at Trump's private estate in Florida were expected to focus on what Trump has described as China's unfair trade practices and inadequate efforts to halt North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile program.

Other reports were also upbeat, with China Daily, for instance, noting both sides had mutual interests.

The timing of the attacks sends a message to the Chinese Trump telling the Financial Times days before Xi's arrival that he is prepared to go it alone on North Korea if China doesn't work with the U.S. to crack down on North Korea's nuclear programme Military options against North Korea are much riskier than those against Syria. It has already tested nuclear weapons, and South Korea's capital, Seoul, is in range of North Korean artillery.

Trump said in an interview with the Financial Times published Sunday that China should help with the problem by using the "great influence" it has over Pyongyang, warning that if it doesn't, the USA will solve the problem on its own, and that "won't be good for anyone".

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the USA and China "agreed to increase cooperation and work with the worldwide community to convince the DPRK to peacefully resolve the issue and abandon its illicit weapons programs".

"They were candid, they were open, and they were very positive", he said. Whether it will be enough to move China towards denuclearizing the NoKo's remains to be seen.

"President Trump noted the importance of adhering to global rules and norms in the East and South China Seas and to previous statements on non-militarisation.

Tremendous goodwill and friendship was formed, but only time will tell on trade". Xi might have exaggerated a bit when he said there were "a thousand reasons to get China-US relations right, and not one reason to spoil the China-US relationship", but it was a good place to start. He did not elaborate.

Mr. Trump had plans to pressure Mr. Xi to reduce the US trade deficit. -China relationship and burnishing his foreign policy credentials than achieving a breakthrough.

Experts say China, which along with Russian Federation has repeatedly blocked United Nations resolutions against Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, will have been both discombobulated and upset at how Trump's air strikes overshadowed the summit.

Xi said his first meeting with the U.S. leader bears unique importance to the development of China-U.S. ties. He noted the historic responsibility of both countries - the world's largest economies and emerging military rivals - to work toward peace and stability.

The two sides also agreed to deepen communication and cooperation in military, immigration, health care and many other areas, including Beijing's efforts to pursue fugitives who have fled overseas.

They remarked generally about "progress" in their relationship and optimism about the future.

He said: "We have made tremendous progress in our relationship with China".

During a campaign rally previous year, Mr Trump referred to a string of his golf clubs when claiming: "You know what - and I love golf - but if I were in the White House, I don't think I'd ever see Turnberry again, I don't think I'd ever see Doral again, I own Doral in Miami, I don't think I'd ever see numerous places that I have". "I believe lots of very potentially bad problems will be going away". One has to see how differing approaches offered by the United States and China could work out in Syria.

Several lawmakers said Sunday that decision shouldn't entirely be up to Trump.

In Beijing, China's foreign ministry urged all parties in Syria to find a political settlement.

"President Trump noted the challenges caused by Chinese government intervention into its economy", Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said.

Spicer said Trump underscored the need for China to take concrete steps to level the playing field for American workers, stressing repeatedly the need for reciprocal market access.

The sudden flurry of action centering on North Korea comes on the heels of Trump's summit in Florida on Friday with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The bonhomie extended behind closed doors, where the United States president's grandson and granddaughter sang a traditional Chinese ballad - "Jasmine Flower" - and recited poetry for their honored guests, earning praise from their "very proud" mother Ivanka in a tweet. About 40 percent of the trade surplus is actually generated by USA companies in China.

The White House has downplayed expectations for a breakthrough on U.S-China issues like trade and tariffs, insisting that the 24-hour summit is mostly an introductory meeting for Trump and Xi. In fact China's strong economic and trade ties with the U.S. can be of great help to the Trump administration to deliver on the election promises.
