The United States was reportedly ready to strike North Korea if USA officials became convinced the country would carry out its test, and the Trump administration said its "strategic patience" with the country has run out.

Another nuclear test would invite tougher measures from Beijing, possibly including new restrictions on Chinese companies' investments in North Korea and cuts in the number of Chinese tourists allowed to visit, Mr Gui added.

The biggest source of foreign currency for North Korea stands to be China, to which it sells millions of tons of coal. It's expected that the North will mark the anniversary with either another nuclear test or another test of a short- or medium-range missile.

The North has in turn warned of a nuclear strike against the United States if provoked.

A White House foreign policy advisor said Friday that the U.S.is assessing military options in response to the North's weapons programs, saying another provocative test was a question of "when" rather than "if". Trump also flexed his military muscle last week by ordering cruise missile strikes on a Syrian airbase the US believed was the origin of a chemical weapons attack on civilians in a northern Syria town.

"U.S.A." On Wednesday he seemed more upbeat, tweeting: "Had a very good call last night with the President of China concerning the menace of North Korea".

The North has said it has developed and would launch a missile that can strike the mainland United States, but officials and experts believe such a threat is some time away.

"How the (President Donald) Trump administration will handle the matter probably depends on whether North Korea conducts a sixth nuclear test", the same source said.

The government also showcased two established ballistic missiles, one for submarines and one for on-land use.

Soldiers, tanks and other military hardware were paraded in Pyongyang in a show of strength on Saturday.

The arsenal of weapons on display included the new ballistic missile - which is thought to have a range of around 600 miles - and what appeared to be a battery of KN-08 and KN-14 missiles, which analysts believe could reach the U.S. mainland.

"They have nuclear weapons".

In his annual New Year's address, Kim said that the country's preparations for an inter-continental ballistic missile launch have "reached the final stage".

Friday media reports pointed to satellite observations suggesting that North Korea could be preparing for yet another nuclear test in the coming days. The country conducted two nuclear tests past year.
