For hardware specifically, the Nintendo Switch outsold the PS4 and Xbox One in March. While we don't have the exact USA numbers, Sony reported that the outstanding Guerrilla Games title had sold more than 2.6 million units worldwide two weeks after launch, making it the best launch for Guerrilla in its history. Combined with impressive Switch hardware sales, these games helped the industry record more than $1.36 billion in total sales for the month, a 24% year-on-year increase over March 2016.

It still had to play second fiddle to Ubisoft's Ghost Recon: Wildlands, but it did beat PlayStation 4 exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn - which was released only a few days earlier.

Check out the full top ten list below! Switch accessories composed a quarter of the market in March to go with the consoles, and the best selling controller of the month was the Switch Pro Controller.

The only hint of how well the Switch itself sold is that it managed 31,000 more sales than the Game Boy Advance, which previously held the record for Nintendo's best launch in the US.

"The two Nintendo Switch SKUs, the 32GB Grey Joy-Con, followed by the 32GB Neon Red/Blue Joy-Con, were the best-selling systems for the month". Naji noted that the system "almost doubled" the total USA hardware sales count for the month, to $485 million in all.

Even the way chart-tracker NPD categorises games is slightly freakish, as they've decided that both Zelda and Resident Evil count as "adventures" and so have revealed that Breath Of The Wild made 54% more money than Resident Evil 7 at launch.

As for te month's best-selling game, Wildlands, is had the best launch of any Ghost Recon game ever, Naji said. "This is the highest attach rate for any non-bundled title for a new gaming platform since NPD began tracking in 1995".

The stock is up nearly 20% since the Switch console was released on March 3.
