The U.S. News rankings highlight public schools that best serve all of their students, including disadvantaged populations.

The schools on the list were given gold, silver and bronze medals.

"It comes as no surprise that all three of Edmond's comprehensive high schools rank in the top ten of the US News & World Report list of the state's and nation's best schools", said Debbie Bendick, associate superintendent of secondary education for Edmond Public Schools. Elizabeth Public Schools, which divided its high school into six different academies, placed two high schools in the state's top 25.

The school was also named the second best STEM high school in the U.S.

The highest-rated IL school was Northside College Prep High School, a selective enrollment school in North Park, which was rated as the No. 40 public high school in the country.

The state rankings are based on rankings received nationally from U.S. News and World Report. "Anyone can attend - unlike numerous others in the rankings, including others ranked in the top ten", said Peter Bezanson, who oversees the network's charter schools.

Utah was ranked in 14th place on the list for its proportion of schools with gold or silver awards. The Julia R. Masterman Secondary School in Philadelphia ranked as the best high school in Pennsylvania. No other Montgomery County high school ended up in the state's top 10, and Whitman did not appear in the national ranking.

Timpanogos High School in Orem, Timpview High School in Provo and Mountain View High School in Orem received silver awards.

No. 798: Catalina Foothills High School, Catalina Foothills School District. The highest-rated CPS neighborhood school was Lincoln Park High School, which finished as the eighth-rated school in the state. Finally, U.S. News calculated a college readiness index, which was the number of 12th graders who took and passed at least one AP test, divided by the number of 12th graders at that school.

This year marks the eighth graduating high school class.

Robert Morse, chief data strategist at U.S. News, explained in a post Monday that the rankings were determined using a four-step process.

Charter schools are public schools run by non-governmental boards.
