At the time of this release, the Will County Coroner's office has pronounced Semaj Crosby deceased and an autopsy will be scheduled for later today to determine the cause of death. She pleaded for her safe return in an interview with NBC 5 Wednesday morning.

The mother has retained an attorney who Ackerson says has not allowed her to speak further.

"When they arrived at the home they came across some kids outside playing with sticks", the department said in a Facebook post.

Ackerson says that, at any given time, there could be as many as 15 people living in that small home and that the lawyer for the child's mother describes some of those people as "squatters".

"Nah", Smith said. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has investigated Semaj's mother in the past for an allegation of neglect.

'We have had prior contact with this family including four unfounded investigations for neglect and two prior pending investigation [s] for neglect opened in March 2017, ' DCFS spokesperson Veronica Resa said in a statement, according to CBS Chicago. They noticed no apparent hazards or anything else that raised concerns about the children's safety, Ackerson said.

"She just learned to walk, so she can't get that far", said Semaj's aunt Lakershia Crosby. The previous afternoon, she had reported that daughter Semaj Crosby had wandered off from a group of people working outside.

Police said East Joliet Fire Department was coordinating with outside agencies for the water resource searches and using drones to assist with grid searches.

Abandoned homes, garages were also being searched, officials said. Police, firefighters and volunteers searched throughout Wednesday but did not find the girl.

After a search of her home, more than 80 Will County emergency personnel and bloodhounds searched the Preston Heights neighborhood, including a door-to-door search and helicopter air search, according to the sheriff's office.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 immediately.
