With Melissa McCarthy serving as host, her Sean "Spicey" Spicer impression put in a show stopping performance.

Meanwhile the real Spicer has largely been away from the heat surrounding President Trump and his administration; he missed the press briefings Wednesday and Thursday due to previously scheduled Navy Reserve duties, according to the White House.

Trump acknowledged it was before the two embraced, ending the sketch. "I should fire him", Baldwin's Trump says. Cast member Mikey Day - playing Paul Ryan - arrived in the middle of the Holt interview as the president's own personal Good Humor man.

Have you ever noticed how all moms have a certain spirit animal? "I sit on every chair like it's a toilet".

And that sets off the trip to NY, where Spicer/McCarthy goes in search of his friend, first at the Trump Tower, later at the Trump National in Pine Hill, New Jersey, where Trump/Baldwin proceeds to assure him that his job is safe.

Referring to his presidency as a TV show, he vowed it will run for eight years. "In an upcoming episode, we will find out that Kellyanne [Conway] has been dead this whole time".

Go to Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., the doorman suggests.

"But that's obstruction of justice", Che-as-Holt said, to which "Trump" replied, "Sure, OK". "Nothing matters? Absolutely nothing matters anymore?"

The cold open wasn't bad, per se, it just paled in comparison to McCarthy's later appearance as Spicer.

This time, McCarthy, who was hiding among the bushes as Spicer, interrupted Aidy Bryant's stint as Sarah Huckabee Sanders ― Trump's political aide who took on the press this week after President Donald Trump fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey. He brings out his props, torments reporters with a fire extinguisher, and many more antics.

"That's right. Spicey's back".

McCarthy/Spicer makes a hasty, angry entrance and steals the podium after a reporter spots the White House official in the shrubbery through a window. "It's offensive. If he's insane, he's insane like a fox with mental problems".

He asked him if it was true if he fired James Comey because of the Russian Federation investigation.

"I know we think this every week, but this week was insane", says Colin Jost, in kicking off Weekend Update. He told us so.There's no Russian Federation thing. "They're going to prove it with a certified letter". But McCarthy makes it work wonderfully by using her unbelievable talents as a physical comedian.

She hosted the above-average episode, and he appeared as Trump twice. The material was sharper than usual, too, because Trump gave comedy writers a lot to skewer.

Eventually, though, Spicer is egged on reporters who repeatedly ask if Trump is lying to him. Period! Then he hired lawyers to agree with him! It's a classic late-in-the-evening SNL weirdo, made all the better by McCarthy staring down a kid and declaring, "I could kick your ass".
