2 dead, several missing as bridge collapses in Goa

Panaji: More than 30 persons are believed to be missing after an old bridge in Curchorem town in south Goa partially collapsed on Thursday evening.

Goa: A bridge built on Zuari River at Sanvordem got collapsed yesterday night. "Some of those who fell into the river, managed to swim ashore", the police said. Drishti lifeguard services, the private agency are called for the rescue operation. this private agency provides lifeguards for all the state beaches. Further details are awaited.

"One body has been taken out of the waters", Savaikar said. "A helicopter sortie is being undertaken along the river for aerial search", a spokesman of the Indian Navy said.

The incident took place when the police were attempting to rescue a youth who jumped off the bridge. "We can not predict the number of persons missing", he said.


"Diving was stopped at around 3.30 am on the request of the collector". The Fire personnel had earlier rescued over 15 locals who had fallen in the waters and some of them who were holding on to the side barriers of the collapsed footbridge.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Thursday told reporters that all concerned agencies have been pressed into action.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he was also monitoring the rescue operation. "At least 30 people are missing", a police officer said. He said the people who were viewing the rescue operation were not aware of the weakness of the bridge.

In 2016, another bridge across the Savitri River on the Mumbai-Goa highway, which belonged to the British era, collapsed taking the lives of a few people.
