Sampaoli moved a step closer to taking over the vacant position as Argentina coach this week after his club side Sevilla said it had reached a deal with the Argentine Football Association (AFA).

Argentina had been without a manager since they dismissed Edgardo Bauza on April 10 after eight months in charge.

Sampaoli, who was linked with the Barcelona job earlier this season, will now be presented in his new role in a press conference scheduled later on Thursday at the AFA training facilities in Ezeiza, Buenos Aires.

"The South American qualifiers are very complicated".

Sampaoli is Argentina's third coach of their World Cup qualifying campaign, with their place in next summer's tournament in Russian Federation still in doubt. The team is also boosted by the return of Lionel Messi. 'We want the world's best player to feel happy being here.

"I spoke with Leo and we're both excited", Sampaoli was quoted as saying by BBC. "I want to welcome Jorge Sampaoli".

Under Sampaoli, Sevilla finished fourth in La Liga this season and sealed a place in the Champions League qualifying stage for the 2017-18 campaign.

Sampaoli has taken charge of the team at a time when their qualification for the 2018 World Cup to be held in Russian Federation is in jeopardy. He leaves with his squad for Australia where Argentina will go on a two match friendly tour.
