In a damning revelation, the joint investigation team (JIT), formulated to examine the offshore assets of the Sharif family told the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday that some governmental departments were tampering with the records.

A letter dated June 8 and issued with the signatures of JIT head Wajid Zia has asked the prime minister to appear before the team of investigators at 11am.

The case relates to the "Panama Papers" leaked previous year that revealed the prime minister's three children - Sharif's sons Hassan and Hussain and his daughter Maryam - owned offshore companies incorporated in Panama and properties in London. Sources said the development was conveyed to the prime minister when he returned from Kazakhstan on Saturday where he had been attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. It has grilled the prime minister's sons several times.

The Joint Investigation Team, formed by the Supreme Court to probe the money trail of the property owned by Sharif family in London, had questioned Sharif's sons - Hussain and Hasan, last month over the family's alleged improper business dealings.

Sharif had met with his close aides yesterday in Lahore to discuss the issue.

Former Interior Minister Senator Rehman Malik has been summoned by the Joint Investigation Team on Tuesday.

The probe, linked to the release of the Panama Papers, focused on millions of dollars Sharif's family holds in offshore assets and whether he lied to authorities about it.

The JIT is bound to complete the probe in 60 days unless it is granted additional time.

"It's a litmus test of our laws that are all citizens are equal in front of law, so we believe that Nawaz Sharif should appear before JIT in this case", said Naeem ul Haque, spokesman for opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

Sharif will become Pakistan's first sitting prime minister who will appear before an investigating agency, the report added. The team has asked him to appear before them on June 15.
