Congressman says member of his staff wounded

Update 11 a.m.: President Donald Trump says the assailant in the congressional shooting has died from his injuries.

A gunman identified as James T. Hodgkinson opened fire shortly after 7 a.m. and top House Republican, Steve Scalise of Louisiana, was among those injured. "This is a game going on for over 100 years, it goes to charity and we need to play this baseball game and so I'm excited that we've chose to do that".

Several other people were wounded, including a congressional staff member and law enforcement personnel. He is in stable condition.

Rep. Roger Williams, a Texas Republican, broke down in tears while thanking the police officers who came to his and other congressmen's aide as they were shot at during a baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

Williams confirmed on his Twitter account that the staffer who was shot is Zack Barth.

"The quick action of Majority Whip Steve Scalise's protection detail saved many lives this morning", Brady said in a written statement.

Williams said the gunman has been detained. Eastern Time at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Va. Williams has been the coach of the team since he joined Congress in 2013. "This is America the greatest country in the world, if you punch us we will punch back and we're going to play baseball tomorrow". Since then, 79 games have been played, with Democrats and Republicans boasting a tie record of 39 wins, 29 losses, and 1 tie. "That is something that we all need to work on". This is a game that has gone on for over 100 years and it is for charity. It has not been announced yet whether or not the game will be postponed or cancelled due to the shooting.

Five members of the Texas delegation are listed on the team's roster: Republican representatives Joe Barton, of Ennis; Kevin Brady, of The Woodlands; Mike Conaway, of Midway and Roger Williams, of Austin and Democratic Rep. Marc Veasey, of Fort Worth.
