A September 16 matchup had been a possibility for Mayweather-McGregor, but that date is now taken by a Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin middleweight world championship fight at T-Mobile Arena.

The Nevada commission approved the date of the fight earlier Wednesday, according to reports.

The two fighters have gone back and forth for almost a year regarding a potential showdown with both men previously stating they each wanted $100 million for the fight.

Mayweather confirmed the fight on Twitter, writing: "IT'S OFFICIAL!" Purse speculation has both fighters earning in excess of $100 million.

The fight will take place at the T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas at the 154-pound weight class.

At 28, McGregor appears to be in his fighting prime after a very busy 2016 that saw him involved in two of the biggest bouts on pay-per-view while also becoming the first ever simultaneous two-division champion in UFC history. The fight will take place in a boxing ring and be governed by boxing rules.

Is Mayweather-McGregor going to happen?

"We haven't taken a bet on the favorite", said longtime Las Vegas oddsmaker Jimmy Vaccaro of the South Point, one the few sportsbooks to have odds up on the fight.

"As with every Mayweather and McGregor fight part of the appeal is the spectacle and outsize personalities who are participating in it", Espinoza said. "Pacquiao's got a really tough fight against this guy in Australia, Jeff Horn and after that fight on July 1st here in the United States if McGregor is still looking for an opponent, Manny Pacquiao is there". Initial reports indicated the Pacquiao fight generated more than 4.4 million US buys and more than $400 million in domestic pay-per-view revenue alone, with the event jointly produced by HBO and Showtime.

There has been a continuous to and fro between the pair for months, with many speculating that the fight will never go ahead. UFC president Dana White, who already has reached an agreement with McGregor, is dealing with Haymon, a meeting of two of the most powerful men in combat sports.
