Trump on Scalise's condition: 'He's in some trouble'

House Speaker Paul Ryan and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi had been discussing "protocol and resources for members' safety" even before the attack, said a Ryan spokeswoman, AshLee Strong.

Steve Scalise, the Republican congressman who was shot by a gunman during early-morning baseball practice on Wednesday, remains in a critical condition in hospital, as the investigation continues into the attack that left five people injured.

The annual congressional baseball game in Washington has been hailed as a rare and welcome moment of unity among lawmakers of both major parties.

"The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time." the Medstar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement, adding that Scalise has "improved in the last 24 hours".

A congressional staffer and lobbyist were also shot, and another congressman and police officer suffered injuries. The shooter died after exchanging gunfire with police. Authorities are investigating the incident but have not identified a motive.

Sava also said Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner, who was also transported to the MedStar facility is now, "in good condition and she's in good spirits". "We now have no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".

The FBI recovered a cellphone, computer, and camera from Hodgkinson's van and was examining them for evidence, the statement said.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was at "imminent risk of death" after a gunman opened fire at a congressional baseball team practice, but the GOP leader is making progress and is expected to be able to walk again, officials said Friday.

On Thursday evening the hospital announced that Scalise had another surgery related to his internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg.

Members of Congress took the field at Washington's Nationals Park on Thursday night for the charity baseball game, many wearing hats to honor Scalise, who has represented Louisiana in the House since 2008.

Rep. Cedric Richmond of Louisiana was the Democrats' star pitcher, and a close friend of Scalise's.

The shooting has raised questions about lawmakers' security, renewed the nation's contentious debate over guns and drawn new attention to the harsh rhetoric that reflects America's political polarization.

"You are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults on our democracy", Trump said. After accepting it gracefully, Barton cracked, "Next year we won't be so nice".

The game, which was broadcast live on cable news, showed Democrats and Republicans coming together on the diamond of the Washington Nationals.

The president's meaning was unclear as he made the comments at an event on Cuba policy in Miami. We all salute them. "How dare they say such a thing!"
