And Walsh said he was surprised that Hodgkinson was the shooter because he knew Hodgkinson as a happy-go-lucky guy, someone who was a jokester at parties.

We also spoke with Dana Rieck, a breaking news reporter with the Belleville News-Democrat, who joined the program to talk about community reaction and the paper's extensive local reporting on the shooter, James T. Hodgkinson.

Four people - including Rep. Steve Scalise, the House majority whip from Louisiana, who was shot in the hip - were wounded in the shooting.

"I know he wasn't happy with the way things were going, the election results and stuff", the shooter's brother told the newspaper.

The FBI is actively investigating Hodgkinson, to include his associates, whereabouts, social media impressions, and potential motivations. According to the court clerk, the charges were dismissed in November of that year. "The bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding", MedStar said in a statement put out by Scalise's office.

He died from injuries following a shootout with Capitol Hill police at the scene in Alexandria, Virginia, outside Washington, DC, on Wednesday.

Moreland said her friend often came over to her house to escape Hodgkinson who was angry much of the time.

Richard Wagner, chief deputy of the St. Clair County, Ill., Sheriff's Dept., said there was nothing in Hodgkinson's record that would prevent him from legally owning firearms in IL.

Former speaker of the House and Trump strategist Newt Gingrich told Fox News that the shooting is part of a pattern of "an increasing intensity of hostility on the left".

The bottom line-Hodgkinson is yet another proof that background checks do not-and cannot-stop latent criminals; they only stop actual ones. Hodgkinson, 66, was killed by return fire.

"He never bothered anybody that I knew of", Guetterman said, shaking his head in disbelief that someone living that close to him could do something like that.

Richer reported from Richmond, Virginia. "We will play for those affected by these despicable and cowardly actions, to support local charities. and to remind the American people that this violence will not define or divide us".
