Authorities say a man gunned down a woman believed to be his wife during an argument early Wednesday on a major Chicago expressway before he shot and killed himself.

According to the Chicago Tribune, a spokeswoman for Skyway Concession Company says the woman got out of a maroon Chrysler when it pulled up to the toll gate.

A Chicago police officer who responded to the scene around 4:10 a.m. saw the man running back to the vehicle and ordered him to stop.

The auto traveled a short distance before it crashed.

Police said both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A Skyway spokesperson said one of their workers who witnessed the shooting suffered a panic attack and was also taken to the hospital.

Eastbound Skyway lanes were closed in the morning, police said, but they were open by 9:45 a.m. Access from the southbound Dan Ryan Expressway to the eastbound Skyway was also shut down.

The eastbound lanes of the Skyway were shut down for almost six hours as police investigated.
