Cape Town - Roger Federer advanced to the quarter-finals of the Gerry Weber Open following an impressive straight set win over Mischa Zverev on Thursday.

Zverev's first two matches of the tournament were fairly comfortable affairs, against Paolo Lorenzi and his countryman Phillip Kohlschreiber, who he defeated in the first and second rounds respectively.

Federer has already won three title titles this season, including the Australian Open - his first Grand Slam success in five years.

"I think the second part of the season will be really crucial for Andy, and Novak [Djokovic] as well". Zverev was serving to stay in the opening set and he committed a double fault to hand Federer a first set point at 30-40.

Fourth-seeded Marin Cilic avoided becoming the latest high-profile player to depart early by beating Stefan Kozlov 6-0, 6-4 and is to play another American, Donald Young, in the last eight.

Murray's defeat ended his 14-match winning streak on grass and his 10-match unbeaten run at Queen's Club, a warm-up event to Wimbledon.

Richard Gasquet beat Robin Haase of the Netherlands 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in the other quarterfinal.

In the final game of the set Khachanov had a chance to pull the break back, but he wasted a break point to find himself a set down. In the victory, Federer won 86 percent of his first serve points and 55 percent of his second serve points.

Federer has yet to drop a set in Halle this week.

"It was important to be aggressive off the baseline and make him feel my variation and the power I can bring to the court", said top seed Federer who has now reached the semi-finals in Halle on 13 consecutive occasions.

Karen Khachanov is coming off a three set win over Andrey Rublev that took 32 games to decide.
