Israel attacks Syrian posts after cross-border fire from Syria

It was the second straight day that Israel responded to what it has described as errant fire from Syria.

On Sunday, Israel attacked two artillery positions and an ammunition truck belonging to the Syrian Army.

"The Saturday strike of the Israeli air force aircraft in the Golan Heights area was in fact carried out against the armored vehicles of the Jabhat al-Nusra militants". The former military official Yaalon last month told reporters that the Islamic State group had also recently apologized to Israeli military forces after unintentionally attacking them along the Syrian border.

As a further precaution, the IDF has ordered Israeli civilians to keep away from open areas along the Syrian border near the city of Quneitra, where internal fighting is widespread.

In April, Israel shot down what it called "a target" over the Golan Heights.

Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman threatened to destroy Syrian air defense systems in March, after Damascus fired ground-to-air missiles at Israeli warplanes carrying out strikes.

Scott Rickard said that Israel has illegally attacked Syria numerous time before, noting that all such instances of aggression against the Syrian territory, including the latest attacks, clearly amount to "an act of war".

However, in a statement it released that military did say that rounds from a single machine gun fired from across the Syrian border had struck near a UNDOF post close to the border between the two countries. The army launched searches following reports that two mortars had landed on the Israeli side of the frontier, but no signs of shelling were found.

The source, which was quoted by RIA Novosti, noted that the Syrian army launched an offensive against terrorist groups that tried to occupy the Golan Heights. "We will not allow Syria to become another front against Israel", he said.

Meanwhile, Maxine Dovere said that Israel responded to "missiles and bombs falling on its territory" and the act of targeting the positions of Syrian forces was for the objective of "defense rather than offense". Israel has tried to stay out of the six-year civil war in Syria and refrained from taking sides, but has responded to spillover fire on numerous occasions.
