The Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in the Bronx borough is among the largest providers of outpatient services in NY.

CBS New York and ABC New York both report that the suspected shooter is not in custody and is believed to have barricaded himself in the hospital.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) said its personnel are on the scene at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital where there are reports of several people shot.

The shooter was identified as Dr. Henry Bello, a former doctor at the hospital, two law enforcement officials told CNN. It took police some time to secure the area, preventing emergency medical workers from immediately entering, the Times said. Police sources said the shooter is a 35-year-old ex-employee using an M-16 type rifle.

CNN reports that the hospital is "among the largest providers of outpatient services in NY".

An official who answered the phone at the hospital said she had no immediate information.

The Bronx-Lebanon Hospital is known as the largest non-profit health care system in the south and the central Bronx.

Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, a 120-year-old facility, claims almost 1,000 beds spread across multiple units.

It is about a mile and a half north of Yankee Stadium.
