A great number of world football stars graced the wedding ceremony of Barcelona star, Lionel Messi, who married his childhood sweetheart, Antonela Roccuzzo yesterday, June 30, 2017.

Football stars and celebrities were among the 260 guests who arrived at the glamorous wedding held in Messi's hometown of Rosario, Argentina.

Dani Alvies, Cesc Fábregas, Xavi Hernandez, Carles Puyol, Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, Samuel Eto'o, Sergio Agüero, Maxi Rodriguez, Ever Banega, Fernando Gago, Angel Di María, Sergio Romero, Lucas Biglia, Mariano Andújar, Javier Mascherano and Ezequiel Lavezzi also attended the wedding.

Messi, 30, and 29-year-old Antonella met when they were both kids 21 years ago in Rosario, Argentina and have been together ever since.

Diego Maradona harbours no ill feeling towards Lionel Messi, after he missed the Barcelona forward's wedding.

Shakira also joined in the celebrations, along with her husband, Gerard Piqué.

The newly-wed couple appeared relaxed as they posed for the media after the private ceremony.

The bride wore a figure-hugging white wedding dress by Catalan designer Rosa Clara.

Uruguayan pop bands Rombai and Marama and Argentina footballer Sergio Aguero's singer-wife Karina are expected to perform.

But after their awkward encounter the pair played it cool, with the Barcelona hero rubbing son Thiago's head.

The couple, who have two children, declined wedding gifts and asked for donations to a local charity instead.

Messi will be tying the knot with Antonella Roccuzzo, also from Rosario, who he has known since he was five years old.

Messi and Antonella have been friends since their childhood.

Rumours circulated of bachelor and bachelorette parties, but the only evidence that emerged was a photo, posted by ex-Barca goalkeeper Jose Pinto, of Messi enjoying a barbecue with a few friends.

Some friends of Roccuzzo have shared pictures of her relaxing with relatives.

Messi's choice of venue has caused some surprise locally, as, while the hotel is flashy, it is right next to a tough neighbourhood called Las Flores, in which the "Los Monos" drug gang has a strong presence.

"Let him celebrate the way someone like him deserves".
