Mattek-Sands was walking towards the net when she set her feet and apparently slipped.

After they attempted to move Mattek-Sands onto her back, she reportedly yelled: "F***ing put me down, f*** it hurts".

Her opponent Cirstea expressed concern about how long it took for her injury to be attended to by staff.

She and Lucie Safarova have won three consecutive Grand Slam doubles titles, including at the French Open last month.

The gangway between courts 16 and 17 was cleared by police and Mattek-Sands, on a stretcher, was wheeled down to an ambulance by Gate Four at 5.10pm. I panicked a little bit as well and called for help but no one was coming and I tried to comfort her as much as I could but you could feel the pain. She was forced to retire from the second-round match and was taken to the hospital. "Sorana, help me. Sorana, help me, '" Cirstea said. It took a while until the medical team was there - for a long time it was just me, her husband and my physio.

"I was trying, but of course I felt useless".

With the win, Rybarikova reached the third round for the second time in 10 appearances at the All England Club.

"We should probably watch the whole video to see what happened but I was there and it felt forever", Cristea said, according to the Mirror.

But they insisted the stretcher was on court well before it was needed, stressing the correct medical procedures are to provide painkillers and keep the player motionless while they are being assessed. She was later seen in tears courtside.
