The movie has a lot going for it including appearances by the Avengers actors Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., it has favorable reviews and is 94% Fresh at Rotten Tomatoes, and Spider-Man: Homecoming opens during a sort of lackluster Summer at the box office.

And while, as we found out, even Zendaya isn't willing to spill many beans about her character and her importance in the movie (you have to go and see it!), the actress is more than happy to talk all things female empowerment and strong, independent icons. Studio estimates stood at $80 million to $90 million, but were upgraded to near $100 million. "Homecoming" is every bit as well-executed and crucial to the overarching story development as an "Avengers" film.

Homecoming swung its way to a strong $15.4 million in previews Thursday night after opening at 7 p.m.

They are set at the Washington Monument and on the Staten Island Ferry, with hundreds of lives at stake each time and Spider-Man making things worse before he makes them better.

That's a welcome development for the overall domestic business, which has been lagging last year's total due to a disappointing second quarter.

Isn't 2017 turning out to be a stellar year for comic book movies? Summer season grosses have been dragged down 8% this year to $2.07 billion as "The Mummy", "Baywatch", and "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" flopped. I bet when he enters a room, people say, "Wait, what's that nice soap smell?"

Fans will be pleased to hear this, considering the worry many were having that the suit Tony Stark designed for Parker in Captain America: Civil War was superseding the hero's own abilities.

"That's what is cool - he gets a moment of redemption and he gets to protect Peter, even though Peter would never know", Watts told Entertainment Weekly of Toomes protecting Peter's identity. "Next time, though, could our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man be a little less neighbourly and a little more snarky?" It too pays homage to the Spider-Man source material.

The film also is opening in many worldwide territories, about 60 percent of the market. Spider-Man: Homecoming wonderfully side-steps this trope, as Parker's motivation rests squarely on himself-a teenager coming to terms with his newfound strength and pushing himself to be better. There are several other Spider-Man and MCU characters, cameos and easter eggs scattered around the film, but I won't give anything else away. Worn in the comics by Spider-Man clone Ben Reilly, the outfit's ripped jumper certainly shares a likeliness with the Homecoming getup, albeit with an inverted colour scheme.
