It marks Canada's first ever world title in any global FIBA event, and earning it required a monumental win over the US team in the semi-finals of the tournament in Cairo.

Kentucky redshirt freshman Hamidou Diallo tallied nine points and four rebounds, while his future teammate PJ Washington added six points.

The USA, which in its first five victories had allowed opponents an average of 61.8 points a game, saw Canada explode for 99 points with 38 coming from 6-foot-7 guard R.J. Barrett. He didn't score a point, the first time that he failed to score in the tournament.

Rana said that the support of Canadian NBA stars and national team alum had a big impact on his team at the tournament and showed how the country's basketball community is growing and becoming stronger. I think we just battled today. The Germans, who outscored the Americans 11-5 at the end of the first half, opened the third quarter on a 6-2 spurt to take a 37-35 lead.

A Kevin Huerter (Maryland/Clifton Park, N.Y.) basket made the score 17-4, and an Edward's, 3, followed by a basket from Huerter and 3 from Louis King (Hudson Catholic H.S./Columbus, N.J.) ballooned the United States of America lead to 25-8 at the end of the first 10 minutes. And the Canadians led 24-10 after 10 minutes - also because they dominated the glass with as many offensive rebounds (eight) as Italy had total boards.

The U.S. closed the gap to six points, but for every comeback attempt the US mounted, Canada fought off the rally to earn the win.

John Calipari and team United States of America expected to win gold at the U19 FIBA World Cup.
