Apple has shared previews for a new set of emoji coming this year.

Apple has updated its collection of emojis with 52 new icons, including a zombie, sandwich, elf and a woman wearing a headscarf.

Today (Monday July 17) is World Emoji Day and hands tech-savvy messengers the opportunity to celebrate their emoji-usage in style.

Apple didn't give the exact release date of emojis, but it is expected that the company might launch new emojis alongside its new OS, iOS 11. According to Emojipedia head and World Emoji Day creator Jeremy Burge, likely something pretty simple - and very highly requested. There's also a new puking face, a "star struck" emoji (a smiley face with star eyes), and an "exploding head", for when someone says something that blows your mind.

Apple announced these emojis will be available later this year, so get those texting fingers ready because your emoji game just got a lot more progressive.

And it's not clear whether the cool T-Rex is a chap or lady.

"The new emoji make it easier for users to express themselves", Apple said in a statement, and we couldn't agree more.

However, if any of these sound familiar to you, that's because Unicode 10 was officially released by the Unicode Consortium earlier this year on June 20th. For example, iTunes Movies is featuring emoji in place of select movie titles.

Unicode dictates what the character should be and what it should represent, but the members then decide what the design looks like for each of their operating systems. For the purely fantastical texters, this latest update will include a zombie emoji, and elf emoji, and a genie emoji.
