India scored 600 in their first innings and then finished bowling Sri Lanka out for 291 earlier Friday. "My debut innings was very much like this one". The dashing Delhi batsman hit 190 off just 168 balls to power India to 399/3 at the end of day's play on Wednesday.

Ajinkya Rahane was 39 not out alongside Pujara.

With regular openers Murali Vijay and Lokesh Rahul indisposed, Dhawan and Mukund opened the innings after Kohli won the toss and opted to bat in the first match of the three-test series.

# Pujara became the first number three batsman for India to post an innings of 150 or more vs Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka in Tests. The right hander also completed 1000 Test runs as skipper on foreign soil.

Things got worse for Sri Lanka, with doctors confirming that allrounder Asela Gunaratne was out for the remainder of the Test series with injury. "It was one of our plans that worked against him, and I'm really happy about that", he said after day two. I think I did that today. Gunaratne fractured his left thumb while attempting the catch and is expected to miss the rest of the test after being taken to Colombo for treatment.

"Tough one to lose one of our main players".

Perera was stranded on 92 with wickets falling at the other end.

The outstanding Nuwan Pradeep (6-132) helped himself to a first five-wicket Test haul - including the big wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara for 153 - on Thursday, but the tourists racked up a hugely imposing 600 all out. "We got a call to say that the surgeons have seen him and they are operating on him".

"It was the last over before tea and the way I was playing, I was confident that I could clear mid-off". But the way I was playing, I was confident that I could clear the mid-off fielder and I was nearly hitting a boundary per over. I was quite disappointed that it didn't come out in the first day but it happens. Its fine, I came back stronger the next day and I had a decent day but I am disappointed that I got out on 80.

Opener Upul Tharanga was instrumental in giving Sri Lanka a good head start after the fall of Karunaratne wicket in the second over, the Lankan opener hit 64 in just 93 balls with ten hits to the fence but was run out by Mukund.

"We dropped a catch off Dhawan and then paid a price", Gurisinha said.

Mukund took a magnificent reaction catch close in to send Niroshan Dickwella (8) on his way off the bowling of Ashwin and although Mathews was still there at the close, Sri Lanka will have to produce something special to avoid a crushing defeat.
