At least 15 people were killed and 17 others wounded after a blast ripped through a mosque in Afghanistan's Herat city on Tuesday night, an official said. The incident happened in a Shite mosque.

Local officials told Tolo News two attackers carried out the bombing at Jawadia Mosque, in the Dehr Abad area, and one opened fire inside the building.

Officials said one attacker was a suicide bomber, and a second had been armed with a rifle.

A reporter for AFP said he had seen a number of bodies brought out of the mosque, leading to fears of a heavy death toll.

The source further added at least 25 have been killed and around 30 others have been wounded in the attack.

No group or individual has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident.

The attack there comes one day after a battle at the Iraqi embassy in the capital, Kabul, which also saw gunmen launch an assault following a suicide explosion.

IS have been targeting Shiite minority crowds and mosques in Afghanistan for around a year.
