Another CNN legal commentator, former Watergate prosecutor Richard Ben-Veniste, said, "It is not at all surprising that we have reached a point involving a grand jury".

Prosecutors use grand juries to compel witnesses to hand over relevant documentation and to testify before the counsel.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Grand Jury was convened several weeks ago.

Ty Cobb, special counsel to the president, said he was not aware that Mueller had started using a new grand jury.

Trump's response to the day of drama was highly anticipated since it represented a first test for the new high powered political and legal team that he has assembled to defend him and relaunch his struggling presidency.

A spokesman for Mueller declined comment.

"This Mueller grand jury thing has capped off honestly a awful day for Donald Trump, because in the beginning it started like this", Noah said, referring to leaked transcripts of the president's phone calls with Enrique Peña Nieto, the president of Mexico, and Malcolm Turnbull, the prime minister of Australia.

"The White House favors anything that accelerates the conclusion of his work fairly", Cobb said in a statement.

The Daily Beast said, "For months, White House advisers have been urging the president - who has no qualms venting about Mueller and other top law-enforcement officials publicly - not to order the firing of Mueller, as aides generally recognize the 'apocalyptic sh*tstorm, ' as one White House adviser put it, that would result".

On Capitol Hill democrats and republicans are working on the bill to prevent the president from firing Mueller, or stopping his investigation. But one of the main reasons for holding a grand jury is that it is a powerful investigative tool. But DOJ rules specify that there are only certain specific reasons that a special counsel could be fired. Mueller also had previously worked in the USA attorney's office in D.C., giving him some familiarity with the courthouse and the judges.

"You fire Bob Mueller who's one of the most admired people I know, you fire him, and you'll create a firestorm here", said Sen. The probe has been expanded to include Trump's dismissal of former FBI Director James Comey and the finances of Trump's family and current former associates. The president can't fire Mueller himself, but he can issue the order to the Justice Department.

Others said the choice could reflect Mueller's reputation for planning ahead and gaming out a possible trial.

Trump, she continued, defeated Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton by being a better candidate "who connected with people and didn't seem angry all the time".

The only prosecutor known to have stayed was Brandon Van Grack, a national security division prosecutor whose name was on the subpoena connected to Flynn. Will anything come from the Meuller investigation? The web of financial ties could offer a more concrete path toward potential prosecution than the broader and murkier questions of collusion in the 2016 campaign, these sources said.
