Paris' prosecutor opened an anti-terrorism probe after a vehicle rammed into a group of military patrolling in the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret on Wednesday (Aug 9) morning, his office said in a statement.

The driver who intentionally plowed a vehicle into a crowd of soldiers in a Paris suburb remained on the loose Wednesday as French police eyed a possible terror motive. Then, around 8:00 a.m., when six soldiers walked out of the barracks into the alley, the driver hit the gas and slammed into the military group before speeding away. A police officer was also injured by gunfire during the apprehension, the prosecutors' office said.

French police officers work near the scene where French soldiers were hit and injured by a vehicle in the western Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret near Paris, France, on August 9, 2017.

It has been reported the injured soldiers are being treated at the Percy military hospital in Clamart, but their precise condition has not been made public.

The motive of the attack is still unknown, though local mayor Patrick Balkany said the incident had "without any doubt" been deliberate.

After the arrest was confirmed, the first deputy mayor of Levallois-Perret, Isabelle Balkany, tweeted "Bravo to the police forces!"

France has been on high alert with enhanced security measures in the wake of deadly terror attacks over the last two years.

"It all happened very quickly", he said.

Three of the soldiers suffered light injuries while three were more seriously injured, but their lives are not in danger, according to the Defense Ministry. Quoting unnamed police officials, however, the AP said a man was arrested at one stop. "It hurtled at accelerated rapidly", he told the TV station.

"I heard a loud noise, the sound of scraping metal".

French defence minister Florence Parly described Wednesday's attack as "cowardly", adding that it "does nothing to dent soldiers' determination to work for the security of the French people".

Another was arrested peacefully after police stopped several cars matching the description of the BMW used in the attack. He later told police he wanted to attack a soldier.

The incident came just four days after Sentinelle soldiers intervened to control an 18-year-old with a history of psychological problems at the Eiffel Tower.
