Crystal Palace 0-3 Huddersfield Town

Steve Mounie joked he would take a picture of the Premier League table after his debut brace helped Huddersfield Town to the top with a 3-0 win at Crystal Palace.

TOWN'S return to the top flight after 45 years left supporters in dreamland as David Wagner's side romped to victory in south London.

Steve Mounie, the club's record £11.5m signing, also showed he is capable of surprising the Premier League with a debut double.

To be honest, when it comes to the first fixture of the new season, facing a side with momentum from a promotion-winning campaign is not the sort of game any team would want up first. It will be up to Wagner to get the most out of his defence as the attack could struggle to find the back of the net.

Former Cardiff City captain Mark Hudson has announced his retirement from professional football as a player and has moved into a coaching capacity at his current club Huddersfield Town. This is why we bought him, to score goals.

To be fair to Huddersfield, they came with a game plan and executed it well, with Palace boss Frank de Boer admitting afterwards that the Terriers deserved their win and that the Eagles have had a "very hard lesson".

De Boer's appointment may signal a change in philosophy as the Dutch manager has already made his player development intentions known in the transfer market.

"I am looking forward to having the opportunity to play with the number of talented ball players that are already in this squad at the club". It worked for long periods of the game, and I think that is one of the reasons we have got this result today.

Huddersfield Town's last top-flight match was in April 1972 and also away at Crystal Palace, a 0-0 draw.

For every way in which it may have been wonderful for Wagner, it would have been a concern for De Boer. It is only the second time in the last 13 seasons that two managers face one another in their maiden matches.

Since 2008-09, only four newly promoted sides have won on the opening day in the Premier League - but all, like Huddersfield, had won promotion via the play-offs; Hull in 2008 and 2016, Blackpool in 2010 and West Ham in 2012.
