His leg buckled, he went airborne and fell to the ground as his helmet went flying. He was helped off the field. "It was a little wet".

NOTES: Giants RHP Mark Melancon, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, was activated off the disabled list and INF Miguel Gomez (right knee inflammation) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to August 9.

"He looked like he was in pretty good pain", Jones said. "Hopefully he's all right".

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said, "I don't know what happened really".

It didn't begin until 10:06 p.m. after another extended weather delay, and it was raining when Harper lost his footing on a base that had water on it.

The ugly-looking scene itself unfolded when Harper attempted to leg out a ground ball in the first inning.

Washington won the game 3-1.

"The same reaction everybody had - silence goes over the crowd", Baker said after Saturday night's game. The Nationals and Giants are set to play a doubleheader on Sunday. At the most, it could have an effect on home-field advantage in October.

Losing a player who could be the MVP this season would severely dampen the team's title hopes.

Rookie Andrew Stevenson came on to play center field in the second and Brian Goodwin moved from center to right.

Harper suffered a hyper-extended knee, according to Washington manager Dusty Baker. The Nationals have been in cruise control for the majority of 2017 and despite some key injuries have maintained a sizeable lead in the National League East. He'll be placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday and his status moving forward will likely depend on how quickly the bone bruise heals.
