India won the toss and elected to chase in the opening ODI of the five-match series against Sri Lanka at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium here on Sunday.

After the historic 3-0 Test series win against host Sri Lanka, Indian team is all set to take on Lanka in the One-day global series.

Indian captain Virat Kohli made an unique gesture to welcome former skipper MS Dhoni to the nets as he is now in Sri Lanka to play the limited overs series.

India have rested their Test bowling line-up of Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja and Umesh Yadav from the ODI squad. The Sri Lankan team is batting first. It's the second phase for Virat Kohli led India after Test series.

In Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka, Sri Lanka may have found aggressors for the top order who could score rapid runs.

- 71 balls Dhawan took to get to his hundred which is the quickest by an Indian batsman against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka.

However, there is some good news for Sri Lanka, as their all-rounder Angelo Mathews, who was only playing as a specialist batsman for the last couple of months, will also roll his arm over.

Head-to-head against Sri Lanka, they have played 11 ODIs at this venue, but only managed to win four of them. Their record of late, including a loss against Zimbabwe does not bode well for them, and this India team will be a tough nut to crack.

"This is the time for us to prove a point to the world, prove that we have the talent and ability regroup and win matches", he said " We want to win.

"We have got to forget the Test series and the mistakes we made".

Sri Lanka, badly beaten 3-0 in the test series, has given a debut to Vishwa Fernando, a medium-fast leftie.

Lasith Malinga conceded 52 runs in eight overs, Vishwa Fernando (43) in 6 overs, Angelo Mathews (9) in two overs, Thisara Perera (18) in two overs, Lakshan Sandakan (63) in six overs, Lakshan Sandakan (35) in 4.5. Pointing towards the curious case of Ajinkya Rahane, Kohli said that the right-handed opener knows that he is behind Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma in the pecking order but he remains India's third choice opener in limited overs format. Fellow spinners Yuzvendra Chahal, Kedar Jadhav and paceman Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets each.
