Why Anquan Boldin is leaving the NFL

In a statement to ESPN, Boldin said that "Football has afforded me a platform throughout my career to have a greater impact on my humanitarian work", but is stepping away because "my life's goal is bigger than football".

In his preseason debut last Thursday, Boldin clearly had work to do in getting reacclimated to football after spending the offseason away from the game.

Boldin finishes his career with 1,076 catches (9th-most in National Football League history) for 13,779 yards (14th) and 82 touchdowns (tied for 23rd).

Receiver Anquan Boldin, who joined the Buffalo Bills earlier this month after going unsigned all offseason, has decided he is done with football.

Boldin insisted Monday that neither the trade of Watkins nor Taylor's struggles had an impact on his decision to retire.

"Me signing when I did had nothing to do with anything other than trying to make sure that my family was ok, make sure that my family was on board with what was going on", he said.

"For me, I'm uncomfortable with how divided we are as a country", Boldin said. I think Tyrod is a fine quarterback and I think he'll be just great.

Boldin, the NFL's 2015 Walter Payton Man of the Year, oversees the south Florida-based Q81 Foundation, which offers educational support for under-privileged children.

"I asked Boldin if any chance he'd sign later in season for a contender. "No". Boldin's 31-year-old cousin, Corey Jones, was shot and killed by a plainclothes officer in Florida on October 18, 2015.

Third, this likely casts a lot of doubt on the notion of releasing Andre Holmes as part of the group of three players that would likely yield them an additional third-round compensatory selection in the 2018 NFL Draft.

He played his final season with the Detroit Lions in 2016 with incredible production for someone his age.

The 36-year old began his career in 2003 and is a 3-time Pro Bowler. He helped the Ravens win the Super Bowl in February 2013.
