The Catalan giants claim the lawsuit relates to the payment of a first "loyalty" bonus on a previous contract renewal until 2021, but the Brazil worldwide recently left the club in order to sign for PSG.

The Catalans are seeking to receive "8.5m euros (£7.8m) in damages, and an additional 10% in interest".

Neymar has made a stunning start to his time in Ligue 1, scoring three times in his first two games, but on Tuesday Barca released a statement confirming they were suing the forward for at least €8.5m.

Neymar has launched a scathing verbal attack on his former club Barcelona and the men responsible for running the club, with the world's most expensive player claiming "there are directors that shouldn't be there". The club also claims that PSG subsidise the amounts in the event that the player can not take responsibility.

"It is noteworthy that this news was received with surprise, since the athlete completely fulfilled the contract then in force, with the full deposit of the amounts set out in the buy-out clause freely agreed with FC Barcelona for his release", Neymar's representatives said in a statement.

"I don't have anything to say to the Barcelona board", Neymar began.

The lawsuit according to the club was submitted on 11 August to the Labour Tribunal in Barcelona.

"FC Barcelona has promoted these actions in defence of its interests, after a unilateral termination of the contract urged by Neymar Jr, a few months after the signature of its renewal until 2021". "But with [the board], no". "At the start, I was happy".

"I spent four years there and was very happy".

"I hope things get better for Barca and that they go back to being a team that can compete".
